Black Maternal Mortality: Why Every Mother Deserves to Be Heard

Pregnancy and childbirth should be moments of hope, joy, and celebration. Yet for many Black women, these experiences can come with unique challenges and risks that cannot be ignored.

Black maternal mortality remains one of the most urgent maternal health issues in the United States. Behind every statistic is a mother, a family, and a community forever changed.

The conversation about Black maternal health is not about creating fear. It is about creating awareness, education, advocacy, and support so that every mother has the opportunity to experience a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth.

What Is Black Maternal Mortality?

Maternal mortality refers to deaths that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, or within the postpartum period due to pregnancy-related causes.

Black women in the United States continue to experience significantly higher rates of pregnancy-related complications and death compared to women of other racial and ethnic groups.

While advances in medicine have improved many aspects of maternal care, disparities in outcomes remain a serious concern for Black families.

The Importance of Being Heard

Many Black mothers report feeling dismissed, ignored, or unheard when expressing concerns about their health.

Comments such as:

  • "You're fine."

  • "That's normal."

  • "You're just anxious."

can sometimes delay necessary evaluation and treatment.

Every mother deserves to have her concerns taken seriously.

If something feels wrong, speak up.

If you are not being heard, speak again.

Your voice matters.

You know your body.

You deserve answers.

Common Warning Signs That Should Never Be Ignored

During pregnancy and postpartum recovery, seek immediate medical attention for:

  • Severe headaches

  • Chest pain

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Heavy bleeding

  • Vision changes

  • Severe swelling

  • Persistent high blood pressure symptoms

  • Sudden abdominal pain

  • Feelings that something is seriously wrong

Trust your instincts. Seeking help early can save lives.

The Role of Advocacy During Pregnancy and Birth

Advocacy is not about being confrontational. Advocacy is about ensuring that your concerns, preferences, and questions are addressed.

Ways to advocate for yourself include:

  • Asking questions

  • Requesting explanations of procedures

  • Bringing a support person to appointments

  • Understanding your rights as a patient

  • Keeping track of symptoms

  • Speaking up when something does not feel right

Knowledge is a powerful tool.

How Doulas Can Help

Doulas play an important role in supporting families throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery.

A doula provides:

  • Emotional support

  • Educational support

  • Comfort measures during labor

  • Assistance with birth planning

  • Encouragement and reassurance

  • Support in helping families communicate effectively with their healthcare team

While doulas do not provide medical care, they can help mothers feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Building a Strong Support System

No mother should have to navigate pregnancy alone.

Support may come from:

  • Family members

  • Trusted friends

  • Healthcare providers

  • Faith communities

  • Childbirth educators

  • Lactation professionals

  • Doulas

Having a strong support system can make a significant difference during pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

Faith, Hope, and Action

As a Christian birth worker, I believe that faith and advocacy can work together.

Prayer is powerful.

Education is powerful.

Support is powerful.

Advocacy is powerful.

We can trust God while also taking practical steps to protect our health and seek the care we deserve.

A Prayer for Black Mothers

Heavenly Father,

We pray for every Black mother carrying new life. Surround her with wisdom, protection, and compassionate care. Give her the courage to speak up when something does not feel right and the confidence to trust her instincts.

Place supportive people around her who will listen, advocate, and care for her well. Protect mothers during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery, and strengthen families throughout their journey.

In Jesus' name,Amen.

Final Thoughts

Black maternal mortality is more than a public health issue—it is a call to action.

Every mother deserves to be heard.

Every mother deserves respectful care.

Every mother deserves support.

By increasing awareness, encouraging advocacy, and building stronger support systems, we can work toward healthier outcomes for Black mothers, babies, and families.

At Sacred Birth Haven, we believe that every mother deserves compassionate, informed, and faith-centered support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
